Veteran journalist Cheng Ming-yan, widely known as “Yan Gor” in the Hong Kong media circle, passed away on November 3 at the age of 70.
Cheng graduated at the Hong Kong Baptist College (now University) in 1977, majoring in communications. He had worked as a reporter, assignment editor of the Chinese-language Sing Pao and chief editor of the Chinese-language Apple Daily. Cheng retired from Apple Daily in 2011. He was nominated as one of the 40 Distinguished Alumni at a ceremony marking the 40th anniversary of the Department of Communication of the Hong Kong Baptist University in 2008.
Cheng had actively taken part in the activities of the Hong Kong Journalists Association. He had served as an adjudicator of the annual Consumer Rights Reporting Award organised by the Hong Kong Consumer Council. Cheng had also helped found the Hong Kong News Expo and had actively participated in their activities.
Cheng had spent his whole life in journalism. His knowledge and experience in the Hong Kong news industry has earned him the title of “walking news dictionary.” He was full of passion and commitment to journalism. He was sincere and friendly and was always happy to share little stories and his valuable experiences with young reporters. His passing is a great loss to the news industry.
We expressed deep regret and sadness to his death. We salute to his contribution to the news industry. We hope he will rest in peace. We would also like to express deep condolences to his family; we wish them well.
Yan Gor, may you rest in peace. You will live in our memory – always and forever.
